Uplifted is a geology term referring to opposing forces putting immense pressure upon each other causing an uplift in the Earth’s crust. It is how the Rocky Mountains were formed. It also suggests achieving an inspired state of mind.
Mountains are thought to contain divine inspiration, and are the focus of pilgrimages of transcendence and spiritual elevation. Mountains surpass ordinary humanity and extend toward the heavens. They symbolize constancy and permanence and at their peak signify the state of absolute consciousness. Amongst the thick forests and snowy summits, mountainous regions are proven to boost both physical and mental well-being. Altitude has known health benefits and the stunning scenery helps with decision-making and creativity.
I believe Art is at its most powerful when it is used as a sensory vessel for healing and mental transformation. Looking at a painting can settle anxiety, foster wellness and help move minds from negative emotions to a state of calm. Art is an escape for the consciousness. It focuses the mind like a repeating mantra. It is a meditative act to view a healing work of art. In this new collection of work for my solo exhibition at Gallery MAR, UPLIFTED, I’m bringing the alpine forest into focus with new approaches to wood and tree textures from the shadowy magical pine groves to the bright and lively Fall Aspens accentuating their chalky birch barks. I’ve been experimenting with layering the painted sections of the forest outwards 3-dimensionally off the surface. Finding a balance between complexity and minimal, action and rest as you move in and out of the picture.
