Sarah Winkler is a contemporary landscape artist whose work explores the dynamic beauty of nature through textured, abstract representations. Her unique approach combines geological research, layered pigments, and bold compositions that evoke the vastness of the natural world.
My paintings focus on the geological storied past and changing present features of landscapes in the Rocky Mountain West and high desert plateaus of the Southwest. A region that captured my imagination over 25 years ago in a prismatic dust cloud rainbow sunset at the edge of Death Valley National Park. It’s as if that moment crystallized the region’s mystique and set the course for endless creative exploration of the fascinating natural history within the landscapes of the West.
I layer the paintings to resemble the geological strata and embed minerals such as mica, obsidian, marble, and sandstone to bridge the tangible and the abstract nature of both the physical landscape and the artistic interpretation of it. Using a mirror effect to show the hidden subsurface geology with the visible world above, creating a dialogue between what’s beneath and what’s experienced.
I focus on the ecosystem as a whole, from snow-capped peaks to rivers and meadows, tied together by cyclical seasons and cosmic events to paint a holistic picture. It’s as if each scene becomes a microcosm of time and place. I decide which specific landscapes or moments to capture as a spontaneous connection made during my travels. My travels usually involve seeking out particular geological or ecological features that speak to me.
