SARAH WINKLER
Studio | Colorado
Sarah Winkler was born in Manchester, England in 1973. She emigrated with her family to the United States as a teenager. Winkler studied Art and Earth Science at William Paterson University (NJ). She studied under painters, Charles Magistro (NYC), Marian Galczenski (CA) and David Prochaska. (CA). Her first significant solo show was ‘Golden Contours’ at the San Luis Obispo Art Museum (CA) in 2011. In 2014, she and her husband moved to Denver, Colorado and had a studio at the Helikon in the RINO art district. She now lives and works on their mountain property at a 9,000 ft peak in the Front Range of the Rockies near Denver.
Winkler’s paintings, since moving to Colorado, are a striking exploration of the geological story of the Rocky mountain landscape, characterized by their hard edge, bold color and dynamic forms. Textures and layered brushwork evoke the rugged terrain and intricate organic patterns, while vibrant color palettes reflect the dramatic shifts of light and the emotional resonance of the seasonal cycles. She structures her paintings in distinctive layers to resemble geological strata and often embeds minerals such as mica, obsidian and marble to bridge the tangible and the abstract nature of both the physical landscape and the artistic interpretation of it. Using a mirror effect to show the hidden subsurface geology with the visible world above, creating a dialogue between what’s beneath and what’s experienced.
Winkler also travels to UNESCO World Heritage sites to observe and research unique geological landscapes for commissions and collections of work. Recently she has visited the Swiss Alps, Iceland, the Italian Dolomites and the Orkney Islands.
Winkler’s clients include Maker’s Mark Whiskey in Kentucky, Vail Health in Vail, CO, The Cosmopolitan Hotel of Las Vegas, Royal Caribbean in Oslo, Norway and Barcelona Spain, Amazon HQ in Washington, The Hotel Oberland in Switzerland. Her work has been featured in TIMES UK, Cowboys & Indians Magazine, Mountain Living, Dwell, BYTE 15, American Art Collector, SW Contemporary, New American Paintings, Dwell, Alpine Modern, LUXE, Vail Valley. The artist is the subject the documentary short, 'Moment' by Making Art Films. Her work is represented in galleries in the US and Canada.
