ARTIST STATEMENT
In the last year, we've experienced some incredible celestial phenomenon over the Rocky Mountains. Starting in August, 2017 with the Great American Solar Eclipse and more recently in January 2018 with the double Super Moons and a Lunar Eclipse. The quality of this extraordinary light over the Western high altitude landscape inspired to me to illuminate my mountains in ethereal baths of energetic light.
In my solo exhibition of new paintings, LUMINOUS MOUNTAINOUS, I explore how the color-rich gradient of sky light under dramatic conditions in the Western region effects the perception, depth, mood and experience of familiar alpine and desert basin formations. Using saturated and desaturated color palettes, simulated geological rock textures and actual crushed minerals sourced from an Arizona Mining company - such as Fools Gold and Pink Granite embedded into the painting surface, these new mountainous worlds will emerge and float suspended in a peaceful, dream-like state of consciousness.
In all my work, I explore geology as the essence of creation and keeper of combined histories. My paintings emerge in geological time - in the sense that they are constructed in many textural layers, with multiple media techniques applied in a sequence of experimental applications. I combine abstract painting, printmaking, photography and digital manipulation techniques to create my textural imagery which become the components in my fully realized miniature landscape collage sketches. Those micro habitats are scaled up into acrylic paintings. In each work, I employ a spatial technique in painting called "equivocal space" which alters depth perspective through color, composition and media to keep your eye engaged and journeying around the image. It's a way I've found that conveys how we move through actual landscapes.
This collection of work was presented in a solo exhibition “Luminous Mountainous” at K Contemporary in Denver, Colorado in July 2018. Several pieces were also shown at Art Aspen and Denver Place that same year.

"Pretty much all of the paintings here are large, and some are enormous: The multi-panel, billboard-sized “Colorado River Flow” is over twelve feet across. The various shapes splayed across the three panels do not represent a literal landscape, and this is especially true across the bottom, where the elements seem to have been freely associated. Winkler conjures the illusion of the landscape through the tight margins of the various parts, especially across the tops of the compositions, which read like mountain ranges set against the skies. Her repeated use of horizontal elements stacked on top of one another successfully suggests the idea of a scenic view without specifically referring to it. Taking all these attributes into account, I realized that Winkler was right: Her paintings are abstractions and, technically speaking, not actually representations of external reality." - Michael Paglia, Westword, July 2018
ABOUT SARAH WINKLER
Sarah Winkler is a British-born, US-based Painter and Collage Artist working in the Rocky Mountains near Denver, Colorado. Winkler studied Studio Art and Earth Science at William Patterson University. She has exhibited her artwork nationally in exhibitions and art fairs with K Contemporary, Gallery MAR, Space Gallery, RH Contemporary Art, Helikon Gallery and Gallerie Citi. Her work has been commissioned internationally in private and corporate art collections including Chevron HQ, Marriott, Hyatt, Ritz Carlton, One Empire Pass, Deer Valley Resort, Hilton West Palm Beach, Viceroy Aspen, Mountain Shadows Resort, The Phoenician and The Cosmopolitan Hotel of Las Vegas. Her work has been featured in The Jealous Curator, CREATE! Magazine, LUXE Interiors + Design, Scientific American, New American Paintings, Dwell and Alpine Modern Magazine.

ABOUT KALLIOPI MONOYIOS
Kalliopi Monoyios graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor's Degree in Geology. For eleven years, she worked at The University of Chicago as a scientific illustrator. In addition to illustrating numerous scientific papers for publication in peer-review journals such as Nature and Science, she has collaborated on three popular non-fiction science books, Your Inner Fish( Knopf, 2008), and The Universe Within (Pantheon, 2013) by Neil Shubin, and Why Evolution is True by Jerry Coyne (Viking, 2009). She is the co-founder and regular contributor to Scientific American Magazine's art and science blog, Symbiartic.
